Listen, we need to have a serious talk about this crazy, juicy ham. We’ve all been there, right? – You sit down for the big holiday meal, you take a bite of that beautiful spiral ham, and it’s as dry as the Sahara.

Why does this happen to good people?! Because spiral hams are already cooked, and the second they hit the oven, they start losing their moisture faster than I lose my car keys.

But don’t panic! I have the ultimate “get out of jail free” card for your dinner.

This Brown Sugar Pineapple Spiral Ham is my absolute go-to when I want an almost fool proof juicy ham, but only have about five minutes of patience. It’s sweet, it’s salty, and most importantly…it is NOT DRY.

🌟Ingredient Notes

✅ Bone-in Spiral Ham: Make sure it’s the pre-cooked kind. We’re just here to heat and flavor, not reinvent the wheel.
✅ Can Pineapple Slices: DO NOT THROW AWAY THE JUICE. That juice is liquid gold, people!
✅Brown Sugar: This creates that sticky, glorious glaze. If you want it sweeter, add more. I’m not the sugar police!

How To Cook This Spiral Ham

  1. Preheat your oven so it’s ready to go.
  2. Put the ham in a casserole dish and tuck the pineapple slices right into the layers.
  3. Drizzle the pineapple juice over everything, then rub the brown sugar over the ham and pineapple.
  4. Wrap it up tight with foil and bake until it’s heated thoroughly.
  5. Baste with the juices once in a while so it stays nice and juicy.
  6. (Optional): If there is a glaze packet, mix it with a bit of pineapple juice and brush it on the ham. Broil.
  7. Slice and serve with the pineapple and juices from the pan.


The Secret For The Juicy Ham

The secret is what I like to call the “Tropical Steam Room.” (Just kidding).

Tip #1 – By stuffing those pineapple slices right into the ham’s “layers” and pouring that juice over the top, we are creating a moisture ‘baster’.

Tip #2 – Then we wrap it in foil like a steel trap in the beginning to lock all that goodness and moisture in.

The result is a ham that actually tastes like ham and not a desert-bleached tumbleweed. Woohoo!

Tips and Variations 

This is a great starting base, but if you’re feeling “extra,” try these:

Listen, you paid A LOT of money for this ham, so let’s do our best to not dry it out. It’s already cooked; we’re just giving it a warm, sugary spa day. While it’s in its “treatment,” keep basting. Every 30 minutes, spoon those pan juices back over the top. And the foil, tighten it back down after each basting To me, it’s a non-negotiable.

Recipe FAQ’s

Are all spiral hams bone-in?

Most are, yes. In fact, majority of the time you’ll find whole muscle hams still contain the bone but there are some boneless hams out there. The best way is to ask your local butcher to remove the bone for you if that’s what you’re looking for.

Easy Brown Sugar Pineapple Spiral Ham

The ultimate no-fail holiday ham. This 3-ingredient recipe uses a "steamy lock down" technique to ensure your spiral ham stays incredibly juicy and sweet!

Ingredients

  • 1 bone-in spiral ham (approximately 8-10 lbs, pre-cooked)
  • 1 can (20 oz) pineapple slices (reserve the juice!)
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar (packed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Remove all packaging from the ham and place it flat-side down in an oven-safe casserole dish or roasting pan.
  3. Slide the pineapple slices between the natural layers of the spiral ham. Drizzle the entire can of pineapple juice over the top.
  4. Rub the brown sugar evenly over the ham and the fruit.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil. This is the most important step to prevent drying!
  6. Bake for 1.5 hours. Every 30 minutes, quickly open the foil and spoon the pan juices over the ham (basting).
  7. Once heated through, slice and serve immediately with the warm pineapple rings.

Notes

  • If your ham came with a glaze packet, mix it with 2 tbsp of the pineapple juice and brush it on for the last 5 minutes of baking (uncovered). Broil for 2-3 minutes for caramelization.
  • Cooking time is roughly 10-12 minutes per pound. Since it's pre-cooked, you are only aiming for an internal temperature of 140°F.
  • You can do this in a crockpot! Cook on Low for 3-4 hours, basting occasionally. (you just won't see the caramelization on top)
  • If you have leftovers, this ham is perfect for sandwiches, casseroles, or chopped up into a breakfast hash the next morning.
