This Cheeseburger Loaded Tater Tots is for those days when you want all the glory of a Big Mac but with the dignity of eating it with a fork. It’s salty, cheesy, and it uses a bag of frozen tots because life is hard enough. If you’re in a “beef and potato” mood but want to feel slightly more sophisticated, you could try Old Fashioned Hamburger Gravy on Mash, but let’s be honest: TODAY IS TATER TOT DAY!

A sheet pan filled with ultra-crispy tater tots topped with seasoned ground beef, melted cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, white onions, and dill pickle slices, all drizzled with a creamy burger sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds.

Sometimes the hardest part of making a cheeseburger is structural engineering. Trying to keep the pickles from sliding out like a botched game of Tetris is exhausting.

That’s why we’re ditching the bun and embracing the glorious mashup of this Cheeseburger Loaded Tater Tots!

🌟 Ingredient Notes

A top-down view of recipe ingredients including a bowl of frozen tater tots, raw ground beef, shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes and onions, shredded lettuce, dill pickles, spices, and sesame seeds.

✅ Tater Tots – One 2lb bag. Get them as crispy as humanly possible.
✅ Ground Beef – Buy it bulk. Save money and then you can make my Instant Pot Lazy Cabbage Rolls.
✅ Seasonings –  A mix of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
✅ Cheddar Cheese –  Shredded, for that essential melty blanket.
✅ The Fresh Stuff –  Shredded lettuce, diced tomato, and white onion for that sharp, clean crunch.
✅ Pickles – Hamburger dill chips. Don’t skip these.
✅ Sesame Seeds – For that “fancy bun” look without the bun.

For the sauce:

Four small white bowls containing the burger sauce components: mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, and clear pickle juice.

✅ Mayonnaise & Ketchup – The creamy, tomatoey base for our secret sauce.
✅ Yellow Mustard – For that classic ballpark tang.
✅ Pickle Juice –  The “magic ingredient” that thins the sauce and adds a punch of tang.

How to Make Loaded Cheeseburger Tater Tots

  1. Spread the tots on a lined pan and bake until they actually have some structural integrity. (aka, CRISPY!)
  2. While the oven works, crumble and cook your beef in a skillet.
  3. Get rid of the excess grease so your tots don’t swim in it, then stir in your spices.
  4. Once the tots are golden, pile on the beef and a generous amount of cheese.
  5. Pop it back in until everything is bubbly and sticking together.
  6. Whisk your sauce ingredients until smooth and creamy.
  7. Pile on your cold veggies and pickles, drizzle the sauce, and sprinkle those sesame seeds.

Serving Tips and Variations

Storage and Reheating

Keep leftovers in the fridge for 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer to keep the crunch. If you’re still hungry and want something dessert-ish, Easy Sour Cherry Hand Pies are the perfect finish.

Recipe FAQ’s

What if I want to make these tater tots spicy?

Not a problem at all my friend! Add some hot sauce over the mix on your plate OR, when frying the beef, add a bit (or a lot!) of dried chili flakes or cayenne. Lastly, some pickled jalapenos would be amazing on these!

Aren’t these just TOTCHOS?

Tater tot nachos (tatchos)? Pretty much, yes but I like making these on a sheet pan and not in a skillet for easier… everything. That’s just me tho!

What about adding BACON?

Honestly, I don’t usually have bacon on my burgers so it’s not something I usually add, HOWEVER, that being said, if you’re a bacon cheeseburger purist, by all means, add loads of crumbled, crispy bacon to the topping OR when frying the ground beef.

I really appreciate you stopping by to see what’s cooking in my kitchen. I hope these tots bring you as much joy (and as little cleanup) as they bring me and my Mom! As some long time readers know, my Mom lives with Parkinson’s disease so I cook most of her food for her to enjoy….. and she LOVES tater tots and anything that goes with them, so this is one of her favorites!

Now go ahead and make these before you change your mind and settle for another boring bowl of cereal for dinner! See you next week!
