These lilac sugar cookies are all about gentle flavor. Not perfume-y. Not soapy. Just a soft, buttery sugar cookie with a whisper of floral sweetness.

I like to sprinkle the lilac sugar on the top of the cookies before baking giving the cookies a delicate crunch on top after baking. The centers stay tender and moist, and it’s the kind of cookie that looks understated but tastes quietly fancy.

๐ŸŒธIngredients For These Lilac Cookies

โœ…Lilac Sugar: For this recipe, I used my homemade Lilac Sugar Recipe.
If you’re not into foraging in your back yard for lilacs (please be sure you have the edible kind if you do!), try purchasing already dried lilacs to mix with sugar and sprinkle on the cookies (or on top of sweet loaves, pancakes, etc).

You can also buy Lavender Sugar that would be a nice replacement, or, make your own Lavender Sugar using these dried flowers and the same method I used in making your own lilac sugar.

โœ…For the cookies you see here: I used a commercial sugar cookie mix and simply sprinkled lilac sugar on top before baking. Itโ€™s an easy way to get beautiful cookies with just a hint of lilac flavor ….. and honestly? Theyโ€™re lovely.

That saidโ€ฆ

If you want a stronger lilac flavor, the best option is to use a roll-and-cut sugar cookie recipe where you can control the sugar. Lilac sugar replaces regular sugar in the recipe and doesnโ€™t get added on top of it.

Iโ€™ll show you both options below.

Two Easy Ways to Make Lilac Sugar Cookies

๐ŸŒธ Option 1: Easy + Pretty (What I Did)

  • Use a boxed sugar cookie mix
  • Prepare according to package directions
  • Sprinkle lilac sugar on top of the cookies before baking

This gives you:

  • Light floral flavor
  • Sparkly tops
  • Minimal effort
  • Zero stress

Perfect if you just want cute cookies for spring.

๐ŸŒธ Option 2: More Lilac Flavor (From Scratch)

If you want the lilac flavor baked into the cookie:

Use a roll-and-cut sugar cookie recipe

  • Replace the granulated sugar with:
    • 100% lilac sugar for stronger floral notes
    • OR ยฝ lilac sugar + ยฝ regular sugar for a softer flavor

๐Ÿ‘‰ I recommend using a classic roll-out sugar cookie recipe from Preppy Kitchen and swapping the sugar 1:1 with lilac sugar.

Donโ€™t Care About Shapes? Here’s An Even Easier Option ๐Ÿ‘€

If youโ€™re not worried about rolling and cutting cookies, my 4-Ingredient Butter Cookies are a great low-effort alternative.

  • Slice the dough
  • Sprinkle lilac sugar on top
  • Bake

Theyโ€™re buttery, simple, and perfect if you just want a soft cookie with floral sparkle.

Helpful Hints (Because Lilac Sugar Is Delicate)

โœ… Lilac sugar is subtle so don’t expect Grandma’s “pot pourrie dish” floral.
โœ… A little goes a long way, especially if youโ€™re new to floral flavors
โœ… These cookies pair beautifully with tea, coffee, or lemonade

How to Serve Lilac Sugar Cookies

  • Stack them on a dessert platter for spring gatherings
  • Serve on a small saucer with tea (pinkies optional)
  • Tuck a few into a gift bag with a jar of lilac sugar
  • Add them to a brunch spread for a soft, elegant sweet
  • Wrap them in a pretty box for a gift!

Theyโ€™re quiet little show-offs.

Lilac sugar cookies are one of those treats that feel special without being fussy. Theyโ€™re soft, simple, lightly floral, and just fancy enough to make an ordinary afternoon feel like an event.

If you make them, let me know how you used your lilac sugar. And yesโ€ฆ they absolutely taste better eaten slowly, with tea, pretending you live in a big English house with excellent gossip. ๐Ÿ˜‰
