Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate simply levels up the holiday festivities. I love those warm spice flavors of chocolate, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg with a little hit of spiced rum all wrapped up in a warm comforting drink.
And one of the best parts of this adult hot chocolate is that it’s kept at the perfect temperature, in the slow cooker, ready when you and your friends are.
Hot Chocolate with Spiced Rum
The holidays are such a wonderful time of year to gather with friends and family, enjoy sipping a warm drink, and watch the snowfall. This Christmas rum hot cocoa is perfect for getting together with the girls on a cold winter day.
While you can totally enjoy this for Christmas with its classic gingerbread flavors it is also just as perfect for a cold day in January, with or without the alcohol.
Ingredient List:
Milk – Go with whole milk if you have the choice. It gives a creamier, richer mouth feel and totally worth the tiny bit of extra calories.
Maple Syrup – I beg of you to use the real thing here. No maple-flavored pancake syrup, please.
Brown sugar – Dark brown sugar if you have it. If not, regular brown sugar will do.
Vanilla
Cocoa Powder – I have made this with both higher quality Dutch cocoa powder as well as regular Fry’s brand cocoa powder. Both are great, use what you have on hand.
Chocolate Chips – Semi-sweet are the ones I used, but if you prefer sweeter chocolate, go with milk chocolate chips.
Spices – Cinnamon, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg.
Spiced Rum – I used Captain Morgan (NOT SPONSORED) but please use your favorite brand of spiced rum.
Garnishes like whipped cream and ginger cookie crumbs.

Making This Easy Spiked Hot Chocolate
It’s super easy to do.
Basically, almost everything into the pot and heat it to almost boiling, and then turn it down to keep it warm.
There are a few hints and guidelines to follow that you’ll find in the recipe card below.
Serving The Hot Chocolate and Rum
This is one of those great hot beverages like hot toddies and holiday eggnog that just feel right for the holidays.
You can whip this up in your crock pot and keep it piping hot all night long during your holiday gatherings.
For this festive drink, you want to keep a bowl of crushed gingerbread cookies or ginger snaps and whipped cream on your drink table. Adding some cinnamon sticks to the table gives another great garnishing option.
You can also forego the whipped cream and go with mini marshmallows as well.
Leave the rum on the table so each guest can add it to the glass before filling it up with the spiced hot chocolate.
This simple step with ensure that if anyone who does not want to drink or any young people attend they can enjoy this Christmas latte as well.
Making This Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate Recipe Your Own
This hot chocolate drink will work just fine with your favorite milk alternative. From soy to almond or oat milk you can swap out the milk for any option you want.
If you are looking for an extra creamy option you can swap out 2 cups of milk for 2 cups of heavy cream.
You can swap out the rum in this one for vanilla, whipped cream, or gingerbread-flavored alcohol or kick up the spice a bit with a cinnamon rum version.
Adding some chili flakes to the hot chocolate will give it a warm kick that plays incredibly well with the sweetness of the chocolate, and the spiced rum.
Storing any Leftovers
This spiced hot chocolate is great for serving fresh and hot but with a good heaping dose of ice, the leftovers can make a great iced hot chocolate.
If you wish to return the leftovers to their original glory you should place them in a small saucepan and slowly warm over low heat until the desired temperature is reached. Add your toppings after warming and pouring them into the cup.
You can have a lot of fun with this one and here are some great cozy drink recipes that can help warm you up this fall and winter.
If coffee is your thing, you can try your hand at making your own coffee creamer or boozy morning coffee creamer in the slow cooker that is perfect for the morning after a late-night holiday party.
Did you make this recipe for the best Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate? If so, did you garnish it with anything different than what I outlined in the post? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate
Perfect for sitting around the fire or when you want a warm cozy drink, this Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate is divine. Steaming hot chocolate with warm holiday flavors echoed with a hint of spiced rum! Get out the fluffy socks and comfy clothes, this drink fits the bill!
Ingredients
- 8 cups whole milk
- ⅓ cup maple syrup
- ½ cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoons ginger
- 2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1-2 cinnamon sticks
- Pinch of cloves (optional)
- 2 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Spiced Rum, 1-2 tablespoons per cup or to taste
- Crushed ginger cookies, for garnish
- Whipped cream, for garnish
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients, except rum, cookies, and whipped cream, and place in slow cooker. Whisk the mixture well.
- Warm on LOW for 3 hours, then on the warm setting for 2 hours, DO NOT ALLOW TO BOIL. The milk could scorch and burn.
( If your slow cooker does not have a warm setting, place the mixture in a pot on the stovetop. Heat until it's steaming, but not boiling, then lower the heat to the lowest setting. If heating the stovetop, then whisk continually as it's heating up, and then cover and turn down to WARM.) - Place a desired amount of rum in a mug then pour in hot chocolate.
- Top with whipped cream and cookie crumbles, serve, and enjoy!
Notes
Just before ladling into the glasses, give the mixture a good stir to re-distribute the spices in the hot chocolate.
There are a multitude of different flavored rums you can use in place of spiced rum. Chocolate rum, whipped cream flavored rum, cinnamon rum, etc.
Be very careful not to bring the milk to boiling temperatures. It could burn and scald on the bottom of the pot.
It's always a good idea to leave the addition of the alcohol to each guest's glass individually, so non-drinkers and little ones can partake in the hot chocolate if desired.
